Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

This week is shaping up to be pretty quiet in comparison to our busy and adventurous week last week. Thank you for your support and help in making the Fifth Grade overnight field trip a success.  The kids had a blast and learned so much about the road to the American Revolution.  This experience truly brings History to life.  Our next BIG event will be The Walk Through the American Revolution.  This will take place on April 5th at 12:00.  Be sure to mark your calendars for this fun day.

Don’t forget, this Thursday night is Family STEAM Night.  It is 5:30 – 6:30.  Be sure to come by and join the fun.

Social Studies:  Continue Chapter 11:  To Declare Independence or Not?  Loyalists versus Patriots;  Begin Preparations for A Walk Through the American Revolution

Language Arts:  Grammar:  Begin unit on Nouns:  Common and Proper Nouns; Abstract and Concrete Nouns;  Vocabulary Workshop:  Complete Unit 7-9 Review;   SPELLING TEST THIS WEEK

Anchors Away!

Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

This is our BIG week!  the Fifth Graders and I are making final preparations for our over night field trip.  They can hardly wait!  I am posting this week’s Curriculum Update in the hopes of covering most of the topics, but I am sure you understand with the excitement building, some things may get pushed back to next week.  Thank you for your understanding! Preparing for Lent

Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

This Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent.  This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday.  I am encouraging the fifth graders to actively DO something that makes them a stronger, more faithful servant of the Lord.  We will be discussing ways in which we can make this happen.  Please feel free to join us on this Lenten journey and try something new.

Please be sure to review this week’s Curriculum Update.  This is the first week of the Third Trimester and as I have told the fifth graders, I will definitely be stepping things up as we continue to prepare for the transition into middle school.  Plan Book will be updated daily, but if you look ahead, you will notice things have already been filled in.

Wednesday:  Ash Wednesday Service

Religion:  Begin to set personal goals for Lent;  Continue Chapter 12:  We are called to daily prayer;  Sacramentals as part of our daily prayers;  Read and discuss Sunday’s Gospel

Literature:  Finish class focus on “setting” and its role in the novel Hoot;  Read and discuss Chapters 13 – 16 of Hoot; Begin focus on characters in a novel

Language Arts:  Grammar:  Complete Verb unit review;  Verb Test on Thursday;  Writing:  Continue to edit and work on Friendship paragraph;  Vocabulary Workshop:  Introduction to Unit 9;  Spelling:  Test on Friday

Social Studies:  Chapter 9 Test on Tuesday;  Begin chapter 10:  Tensions grow between the Colonies and Great Britain;  The Stamp Act, The Boston Massacre, The Boston Tea Party and The Intolerable Acts;  Prepare for over night field trip aboard HMS Surprise

Curriculum Update for the Week of February 21, 2017

Religion:  Begin Chapter 12:  Living as Prayerful people; Types of prayer; Holy Days of Obligation

Literature:  Focus on Setting of a novel;  Continue to read and discuss the novel, Hoot;  Discuss how setting affects the story and plays a role in the telling of the story.

Social Studies:  State Fair on Wednesday;  Finish Chapter 9- Colonial Williamsburg’s government;  Religion and slave quarters;  Chapter 9 test next Tuesday

Language Arts:  Spelling test on Friday; Finish grammar unit on verbs;  Continue to focus on narrative writing- finish short story:  The Never Ending Surprise

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

Here comes the Sun!!!!  It looks like we are headed for a week of sunshine and warm weather.  With the sunshine in mind, this week is promising to be a much needed quiet week.  I know it’s Valentine’s Day, but the Fifth Graders and I are trying our best to keep it low key, but fun.  We are exchanging Valentine cards and will enjoy a sweet treat or two.  This seemed to be the option the boys and girls could easily agree upon.  I must admit, I absolutely LOVE Valentine’s Day.  It’s the one day a year people stop what they are doing to show just how much they care for one another.  What a great day to celebrate!  I hope your Valentine’s Day is filled with lots of love!

Junior Achievement BizTown Here We Come!

Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

This week is the week for BizTown.  The Fifth Graders and Sixth Graders are so excited for this fun learning experience.  I can hardly wait to see their faces when we walk in.  Thank you to all the parents who have volunteered their time for interviews, the power session this Wednesday and for our visit to BizTown on Thursday.  Your help and support make all things possible.  Thank you!

Catholic Schools Week!

Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

Happy Catholic Schools Week!  This is the week the kids have all been waiting for.  Please be sure to check Planbook to see this week’s schedule of homework, tests and quizzes.  Due to all of the celebratory festivities of this week, I will not be posting a Curriculum Update.  While my plans are written and ready to go, I have a feeling they will be altered quite a bit.  Instead, please see the list below to see this week’s schedule of events.

Monday:  No Monday Mass; Hawaiian add-on day; Principal Appreciation Day

Tuesday:  Parent Appreciation Day!  Please enjoy a Parent Appreciation continental breakfast hosted by your SMA Faculty in the Gathering Hall from 8:00 until 9:00

Thursday:  Student Appreciation Day!  Appropriate free dress;  International Lunch; Game day and electronics day

Friday:  Grandparents’ Day;  Mass at 11:15;  Full dress uniform required

Here come the rain again!?!?!?!

Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

The rain has decided to come back… again!  Thank you for allowing your students to share their board games and card games with the class.  It’s a nice change from the struggle of finding an appropriate cartoon they all can enjoy during the rainy day recess/lunch.  I know the kids have loved the friendly competition.

Social Studies:  Begin Chapter 8:  Slavery in the Americas- life in W. Africa;  Europe and the slave trade; the Triangular Trade and the Middle Passage;  Continue to prepare for JA BizTown;  Current events- read and discuss weekly magazine- Time for Kids

Language Arts:  Vocabulary Workshop:Introduction to unit 7;  continue to work on expository essay, “What makes Stella Maris Academy an community of knowledge, faith and service”;  Spelling:  Hoot, spelling unit 3;  Spelling test on Friday

Art: Apply knowledge of the 5 basic elements of shape to drawing a realistic bird from a photograph. Use shape, color and value to create a picture of a bird using painted paper collage technique.

Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

Here comes the rain again!  I have told the class they are able to bring board games, puzzles and card games (not Magic, the Gathering) for rainy day recess.  These activities will keep them active and interacting with one another.

Literature:  Continue to read and discuss Hoot, chapters 3 – 5;  Focus on elements of fiction and characterization;  This week we will begin a new focus on independent reading stamina and comprehension

Language Arts:  Vocabulary Workshop:  introduction to unit 6 words;  20 word cards due on Friday;  Spelling:  Continue unit list passed out last Thursday- please see Plan Book for daily homework;  Test on Thursday;  Writing:  discuss and complete essay:  “How is your school a community of Faith, Knowledge and Service”

Welcome to 2017!  I can already tell this is going to be a fantastic year.  I am looking forward to seeing all of my fifth graders and hearing about the new Christmas memories that were made during our two week break.

Religion:  Begin Chapter 9:  Celebrating Confirmation and the parts of the Confirmation Mass;  The Gifts of the Holy Spirit

Literature:  Begin Hoot novel study;  Read and discuss chapters 1-3 while focusing on standard of point of view and sequence of events

Language Arts:  Grammar:  Verbs- to be, Linking Verbs and Linking Verbs as Predicate Adjectives;  Idioms;  No Spelling this week

Social Studies:  Continue Chapter 7, Lessons 3-7:  Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Georgia

Technology:   Work on State Report- Research and locate graphics to complement written work.  Students who are done may continue to work on coding activities from our Hour of Coding day.
