Religion:  Chapter 6:  The Liturgical Year and the Civil Calendar; Chapter 7:  Ordinary Time and Unit 1 Review

Literature: Continue to read and discuss Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Chapters 8-10;  Continue to focus on Character Analysis

Social Studies:  Review Chapter 5;  Chapter 5 Test on Tuesday;  Begin Chapter 6:  Early English Settlements; Roanoke and Jamestown

Language Arts:  Grammar:  Irregular Verbs; Direct Objects;  Vocabulary:  Unit 4 Test on Friday– Check Plan Book for Homework assignments;  Writing:  Continue to work on Persuasive Hogwarts House Essay;  No Spelling Unit this week!

Art:  Continue to work on Bird Collage;  Apply knowledge of the 5 basic elements of shape to draw a realistic bird from a photograph;  Use shape, color and value to create a picture of a bird using painted paper collage technique

Literature:  Continue to read and discuss the novel, Wonder;  Begin to plan and organize Theme Paragraph on Wonder

Language Arts:  Spelling:  NO SENTENCES THIS WEEK;  Unit 6 Test on Friday;  Grammar:  Prepositions is writing; Verbs- To be; Verbs of action and contractions;  Vocabulary Workshop:  Introduction to Unit 3 vocabulary words

Social Studies:  Finish Chapter 4 and begin Chapter 5:  Explorers of the New World;  routes of exploration to the New World:  Columbus and John Cabot;  Begin research for Explorer’s Google Slide Presentation

Curriculum Update

Dear Fifth Grade,

The Fifth Graders are well into their studies.  We are starting to wrap up our units and will begin to study for upcoming unit tests.  Please be sure to check Planbook each night to see when the tests are scheduled for.  While I may list them here on our Curriculum Update, sometimes I feel the need to move them back a day or two.  Planbook will give you the latest information with regards to homework, tests and quizzes.

Monday:  8:00 Morning Mass:  Please drop off at the Junior Yard so we are able to walk to mass with our First Grade Buddies

Tuesday:  STAR Testing for Fifth Grade;  Pizza Lunch

Friday:  Minimum Day

Language Arts:  Grammar:  Compound subjects and verbs; Imperative Sentences; Preposition or Adverb?; Complete Chapter 1 Review; Spelling:  Unit 4- spell words with long o sound; spell words in the present and past Unit 4 Test on Friday;  Vocabulary Workshop:  Continue Unit 1- Unit 1 Test Monday, September 26th

We did it!  We made it through our first week of full days.  The Fifth Graders did a great job this week and they are definitely eager to learn.  I am so proud of all of them.  Please look over this week’s Curriculum Update to see what we are learning.

Math:  Complete comparing fractions;  Fractions greater than 1; Add and Subtract like mixed numbers; Quiz Thursday on Lessons 1-6;  Unlike Denominators

Literature:  Continue to read and discuss, Wonder; Focus on standards for Figurative Language and Point of View

Language Arts:  Deleting prepositional phrases; helping verbs; compound objects of the prepositions and compound subjects; Spelling Unit 3 Test on Friday;  Continue Vocabulary Workshop Unit 1

Full Speed Ahead!

Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

This week the Fifth Graders and I will be in full swing!  Last week was a successful week of learning the routine.  I am so proud of how quickly the class has settled in.  Thank you for your support at home to help make this happen.
