Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

Yes, you guessed it… the fifth graders will begin reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone this week.  I have been waiting for this day for so long.  I cannot wait to share all of the magical excitement with the class.  I hope you are able to join in the fun with some great discussions at home.

Don’t forget, there is Monday morning mass this week and we will meet our first grade buddies in the Junior Yard and walk to the church together.  Tuesday is pizza lunch and Friday is SMA Spirit Wear day.  Be sure to mark your weekly calendar with these events.

Curriculum Update for the Week of October 19, 2015:

Religion:  Finish Chapter 4 and review for the Chapter 4 test.  Chapter 4 Test next Tuesday;  Please continue to work on Saint Reports at home

Math:  Continue Chapter 2:  Subtracting with whole numbers and decimals; regrouping and reordering; rounding decimals; Chapter 2 quiz on lessons 4-7 on Thursday

Reading:  Read and discuss Chapters 1-4 of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone;  Complete comprehension activities and topics that include character, theme and setting

Langauge Arts:  Vocabulary Workshop: Vocabulary cards due Tuesday; Complete Unit 3 workbook pages; Grammar:  verb phrases and irregular verbs; Writing:  Begin to discuss and write Explorer’s Report for Social Studies

Social Studies:  Continue Chapter 3:  New ideas in Europe; the Renaissance; navigation and a sea route to Asia

Art:  Explore the art of the Pacific Islands, especially batik fabric design and Tiki sculpture; Understand and use symmetry in an art work; Use crayons and black ink or paint to simulate the batik wax-resistant fabric dying technique; Make an original Tiki mask design in wax-resist

Music:  Continue to work on Christmas pageant songs

Happy Columbus Day!

Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

Hope all of you have enjoyed this three day weekend.  It’s been a pleasant little break and hopefully we will all return rejuvenated and refreshed.

Don’t forget, this Wednesday Mrs. McGarry is taking the class on a walking field trip to St. Andrews Episcopal Church to see an art exhibit on Religious Iconography.  Permission slips are due tomorrow.

Reading:  Finish Wonder novel study;  Wonder test on Thursday;  Begin writing Theme paragraph

Language Arts:  Grammar:  Continue study of contractions; Main verbs and helping verbs; Irregular Verbs; Vocabulary Workshop:  Begin Unit 3; Intro to unit words and definitions;  Complete 20 vocabulary word cards

Math:  Continue Chapter 2: adding and subtracting decimals; add whole numbers and decimals; ALEKS;  Quiz on Thursday for Chapter 2, lessons 1-3

Dear Fifth Grade,

We have a busy week ahead so I am just going to jump right in with this week’s events.  First off, we have Monday morning mass.  Please drop your student off at the Junior Yard so we are able to walk with our first grade buddies to the church.  SMA is playing host to the Scholastic Book Fair.  Please remember to send some money with your student so they are able to purchase those treasured books.  Tuesday is pizza lunch and Thursday is the fifth grade field trip to the U.S.S. Midway.  It should be a great day for the class and I know the students are all looking forward to this fun day.  Lastly, do not forget, there is no school next Monday due to the Columbus Day holiday.  As always, please let me know should you have any questions about our week ahead.

Reading:  Continue to read and discuss, Wonder;  Writing:Discuss October precept and complete a response in paragraph form;  Complete comprehension questions

Social Studies:  Finish Chapter 2: Peoples of the East; the Haudenosaunee Indians;  Chapter 2 Test Friday;  Time for Kids

Language Arts:  Spelling unit 2:  Test on Friday;  Grammar:  contractions; using contractions in writing; contractions and confusing words

A BIG thank you to Mrs. Goldman and Mrs. Koressar for all the help and assistance they have given to transform our fifth grade classroom into a magical atmosphere. There is more to come and I cannot wait for all of you to see it.

Curriculum Update

Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

I hope everyone enjoyed their Friday Family Fun Night.  SMA’s annual night of fun is always a good time and it is a real treat to see everyone celebrating the start of a new school year.  Thank you for coming out to show your SMA pride.  We have an amazing school community and I am so blessed to be a part of it.

Just a reminder that there will not be Monday morning mass this week as we have our October All School Mass on Friday.  Please remember to have your student dressed in their mass uniform.  Thank you!

Well, it looks like another busy week of learning in the fifth grade.  Be sure to ask your student how they are enjoying our class novel, Wonder.  We have had some amazing class discussions about this touching story and I am so proud of the depth and emotion our fifth graders have been able to express and share.  This is perhaps been the best class novel experience I have ever had.

Curriculum Update

Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

The fifth graders and I are now in the full swing of things and have definitely found our daily rhythm.  Thank you for all of your support at home to help make this happen.

This Monday we will have morning mass.  Please be sure to drop your fifth grader off at the Junior Yard so we are able to walk to church with our first grade buddies.  Tuesday is Picture Make-up Day and Pizza Lunch day!  Friday is Spirit Wear Day and Family Fun Night-  cannot wait to see all of you there!  We have much to look forward to, but in the mean time, please take a peak at this next week’s Curriculum Update to see what the fifth graders will be learning.

Curriculum Update for the Week of September 21, 2015:

Religion:  Chapter 2 Test on Tuesday;  Begin Chapter 3- Celebrating the Seven Sacraments; Christian Initiation- The Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation; The Sacraments of Healing- Penance, Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick

Math: Practice unlike mixed numbers; Reasonable Answers; Real World Problems; Math Practices; ALEKS- Master Five Topics this week

Reading:  Continue to read and discuss the novel, Wonder;  Complete comprehension activities together and indepently

Language Arts:  Introduction to Vocabulary Workshop unit 2- complete word flashcards; Grammar- Continue to review  Unit 1- subjects/verbs; verb phrases; compound subjects and compound verbs; imperative sentences, infinitives and Prepositions or Adverb?;  Grammar test next Monday

Social Studies:  Continue chapter 4- Peoples of the southwest- the Hopi;  Peoples of the Plains:  The Comanche;  Time for Kids

The Week Ahead

Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

It’s time to get ready for another wonderful week at SMA!  I just wanted to pop in for a few reminders.  Don’t forget, tomorrow is picture day.  All students must be in their full dress uniforms for this special event.  In addition, tomorrow is Monday morning mass.  Please try your best to have your fifth graders to school on time.  Thank you!

In anticipation for our new Star Testing program, A. R. will not be available during this week.  The company is making upgrades and preparing the system with all of our student information.  Thank you for you patience in this matter.  Lastly, this Friday is “Dollar Denim Day”.  Please remember to send your fifth grader with their dollar.

Happy Labor Day!

Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

Happy Labor Day!  I hope everyone has a wonderful long weekend of fun and family time.

This last week was a week full of learning and creating new memories for us to share as a class.  I am blessed to be with my fifth grade class every day.

Don’t forget, this Tuesday is the first Pizza Lunch of the school year.  It should be a fun time for the class to continue to bond with their first grade buddies.

Just a reminder, fifth grade has P. E. on Wednesdays and Fridays.  On all school mass days, the students need to change into their athletic shoes so they are able to fully engage in Mr. Guay’s class.  Thank you so much.  I know there is a great deal to remember during the first few weeks back.  Hopefully after the long weekend we will all be back into the swing of things.  Coming back after the long summer break is always a transition for sure.

Reading:  Continue to read and discuss Chapters 11-15 of Frindle;  We will finish the book Thursday and take a whole novel test on Friday;  The following week we will begin reading Wonder

Language Arts:  Grammar:  Helping Verbs; Compound Object of the Preposition; Compound Subjects;  Vocabulary Workshop:  We will finish the Unit 1 Workbook pages 18-21(not the ‘Words in Action” section).  There will be a Vocabulary Unit 1 Test on Friday.   It will be a matching test

Curriculum Update

Dear Fifth Grade Parents and Students,

The first week of the new school year was a great success and I can see the class is settling in quite nicely.  We are all ready for week 2!

Here is a quick glimpse of next week’s events.  Next Monday marks the beginning of Hot Lunch and the Milk Program.  We will also be celebrating our first all school mass on Friday.  Mass uniforms will be required.  Lastly, I will be posting the nightly homework requirements each afternoon so, if for some reason there is any confusion about what is for homework, be sure to check the homework section of the fifth grade web pages.  Thank you!

Religion:  Continue chapter 1:  The Kingdom of God; Jesus’ Disciples continue his work and build the Church; Chapter 1 quiz on Thursday

Math:  Equivalent fractions; equivalent fractions and multiples; review of lessons 1-1 – 1-3; comparing fractions; work on ALEKS

Reading:  Continue to read and discuss Frindle, Chapters 5-8; reader’s response letters and notebook activities

Language Arts:  Continue opinion writing unit; Grammar: How to write a friendly letter; prepositions and prepositional phrases

Vocabulary Workshop:  Continue unit 1- flash cards; choosing the right word

Welcome Back!

Dear Fifth Grade Students and Parents,

Welcome back to what I am certain is going to be a Magical Year in fifth grade!  I am blessed and excited to not only be a part of the SMA Community, but to also be a part of the Fifth Grade Family.  I cannot wait to make new memories together.

Here is a tentative look at what we are going to cover throughout this week.  You will note that I do not have the topics for Math and Science posted.  I will be coordinating with the Science (Mr. K.) and Math Teacher (Mrs. Stevens) in the coming days to make sure you know where to locate their information.  Thank you for your patience and understanding as the faculty works together to build our new SMA website.

Curriculum Update for the Week of August 24, 2015:

Religion:  Begin Chapter 1: “Jesus is the Son of God” -The Blessed Trinity; Jesus shows us God’s love; the Mission of Jesus and The Kingdom of God; the disciples of Jesus continue his work to build the Church;  Jesus Calling reflection journal (this will be a daily activity we discuss and complete in class)

Reading:  Student Interest Survey; Begin unit on story elements: Characters- the antagonist and protagonist. Read and discuss chapters 1-4 of Frindle.  Complete comprehension activities in interactive reading notebooks

Language Arts:  Writing-  begin unit on opinion writing and the structure of an opinion paragraph. Grammar: Review of sentences- types of sentences; fragments and run-ons; Vocabulary Workshop:  Introduction to the words of unit 1

Art: Read the book, I am an Artist; Reflect on what it means to be an artist; Create a personal expression of what it means to be an artist; Improve production in drawing and shading with colored pencils.

Social Studies:  Begin chapter 1: the land and climate- geography and landforms

Just a reminder, Wednesday is Back to School Night for grades TK-5.  I will have the sign-up for Parent/Teacher Conferences available as well as go over a few key elements of fifth grade.  I hope to see all of you there!
